If you’re looking for a campsite in Door County, then you likely already have an itinerary of adventures in mind. If that’s the case, choosing a campground by location really helps to narrow down the options.
Before we get started, I want to point out that Door County State Park camping can be a fantastic option. However, keep in mind that the sites book up fast. If you happen to miss out, there are plenty of private campgrounds in great areas surrounding the parks.
We’ve organized our list based on proximity to popular outdoor attractions like State and County parks. Start by getting oriented with a map and read through the summaries of each location. Then as you learn about the best campsites in Door County you’ll be well equipped to make a great decision.

1. Peninsula State Park in Door County
If Peninsula State Park is on the top of your lits, then the following campsites in Door County are just what you’re looking for.
Located between the towns of Fish Creek and Ephraim, Peninsula and the surrounding area provide great options for Door County RV camping in Door County, tent sites, as-well-as cabins.
If you don’t already know, inside the state park you’ll find scenic hikes, beaches, panorama lookouts, and much more. This location is perfect for adventure seekers and families alike.
There’s even an 18-hole golf course and outdoor theater.
It is worth pointing out that an estimated one million visitors travel to the park every year. This means that planning your trip in the shoulder seasons is highly recommended. But even at its busiest, there’s always a secret picnic spot or secluded strip of shoreline just waiting to be found.
Camping At Peninsula State Park
This Door County State Park camping option is well known in Wisconsin and for good reason! Peninsula State Park not only has some of the best views in the state, but also some really beautiful campsites.
While Peninsula has over 400 onsite campsites, they still seem to book up fast! You are allowed to make reservations 11 months in advance which means if you are booking a trip in July, you may need to book a campsite in August the year prior.
If you like to live by the seat of your pants as we do, you can try to score one of the ten non-reservable walkup sites on the day of arrival. When we tried this, the person before us in line got the last spot! So we hoped the ferry and stayed on the more secluded Washington Island (learn more below).

As we’ve mentioned before, Peninsula State Park fills up fast but camping near Peninsula State Park at private campsites can provide a quieter atmosphere while still bring very close to the park.

Fish Creek Campground Near Peninsula State Park
This private campsite in Door County is only a two-minute drive from the state park. Camping here will give you amenities, well-kept grounds, and even the option to say in one of their two cabins. With pull-through sites, Fish Creek Campground is perfect for RV camping. Door County in the summer would even allow for a nice 20-30 minute walk to Peninsula State Park.

Egg Harbor Campground Near Peninsula State Park
Egg Harbor Campground is just under a ten-minute drive to the State Park and is well worth your consideration. Plus, for those with friends preferring indoor accommodations, this site offers great cabins and A-frame lodging.

Again, this site is just outside of Peninsula State Park. Located north-east of the park at about a ten-minute drive, Aqualand Campground is a family-friendly haven for camping in Door County with kids. In fact, avid young fishermen can spend hours casting into the trout ponds without leaving the grounds.

2. Washington Island
Washington Island was our first experience camping in Door County. Why you might ask? We just barely missed out on the last campsite at Peninsula State Park. So, after getting some pizza from Wild Tomato, we jumped on the ferry and found a Washington Island campground.
The beauty of Washington Island is that it provides an extra bit of seclusion that mainland Door County can’t. That being the case, we definitely enjoyed our experience as-well-as our campsite in Door County’s Washington Island. Locals even describe their island as being “north of the tension line.”, and for good reason.
The quiet paved roads on the island make it great for biking or even moped rides. However, we typically recommend bringing a car across the ferry as things are fairly spread out.

3. Rock Island State Park in Door County
Nothing says remote like having to take two ferries to get where you’re going. Start by voyaging the Washington Island Ferry Line across a body of water known as Death’s Door. Then, drive from one end of the island to the other to get on yet another ferry, this time without your car. Once you’ve reached land for a second time, you’ll have arrived at the beautiful Rock Island State Park.
Offering scenic hikes, beaches, and Lake Michigan’s oldest lighthouse, Rock Island State Park is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream.

4. Newport State Park in Door County
Our fourth location for campsites in Door County is Newport State Park. In 2017 the park joined the ranks as an International Dark Sky Park alongside only a handful of other parks in the United States including Glacier National Park in Montana.
Located at the northern tip of Door County, Newport State Park provides incredible views of Lake Michigan. Moreover, the hiking trails, biking trails, and picnic areas create perfect opportunities to take advantage of the great outdoors.

Much like Rock Island, but without the ferries, Newport State Park only offers pack-in campsites in Door County’s prized International Dark Sky Park. For this reason, RVs are obviously not allowed and tent sites are your only option. Most of the campsites are reservable.

5. Whitefish Dunes State Park in Door County
Whitefish Dunes State Park, which surrounds the popular Cave Point County Park, is a popular summer destination for beachgoers, hikers, and kayakers alike. Located on the eastern side of Door County, the park looks over Lake Michigan and protects the fragile sand dunes of the area.
Cave Point County Park is located inside of Whitefish Dunes and contains beautiful cliffs and caves along the shoreline. The area is part of a rock formation known as the Niagara Cuesta which also makes up the famous Niagara Falls in New York. Outdoor activities at Whitefish Dunes State Park include hiking and water sports.

6. Cana Island Lighthouse County Park in Door County
For lighthouse seekers, this Door County park is a must-see. Climbing the 97 steps of the Cana Island Lighthouse will certainly leave you out of breath but is still a sight to see. Be aware that the causeway between mainland Door County and Cana Island is often covered in shallow water so proper shoes are needed if planning to visit the island on foot. You may also take the complimentary tractor ride to visit the lighthouse.
